Packard Plant 3.07.12

Built in 1907, the Packard Plant was considered to be the most modern automobile plant in the world. Now the 3,500,000 sq ft. facility is all but a barren wasteland riddled with old car parts, bricks, rebar, and graffiti. Aside from a few squatters and the occasional groups of people wandering around to see the famous Packard Plant, this place seems like what would be left over if bombs had hit it instead of half a century of deterioration. All that being said, I am absolutely fascinated with the urban decay and natural beauty of this awe inspiring structure! I hope to photograph it many more times before it is torn down, which could start happening at any day.

After the excursion to the Packard Plant we made our way to the Heidelberg Project. For the past 25 years Tyree Guyton has been transforming a block on Detroit's east side into one of the great gems of Detroit. Guyton started the project in an effort to create hope in the community and create a sense of "thinking outside the box". Something that we will all have to do if we are to bring any change about in  one of the greatest cities this country has seen! I hope for a better Detroit for not just our generation, but the many more to come after us!
